Canisius' McQuail Named NCBWA National Hitter of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 11, today. Canisius junior infielder Steve McQuail was named National Hitter of the Week, while Fresno State junior right-handed pitcher Greg Gonzalez was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
In five Canisius victories last week, McQuail hit .562 (9-for16) with 10 runs scored, three home runs, 15 RBI, a .619 on-base percentage and a 1.250 slugging percentage. The junior had two home runs in Saturday's win at Saint Peter's. McQuail also had a tie-breaking grand slam in the fifth inning of Sunday's 13-4 win over the Peacocks. McQuail is currently on a 14-game hitting streak, the longest of his career.
Gonzalez made history on April 10 at Les Murakami Stadium, becoming the seventh Bulldog in Fresno State annals to throw a no-hitter. In his first career start, the junior threw a complete-game shutout over Hawai'i. Gonzalez silenced the Rainbow batters throwing his first career no-hitter. The last no-hitter by a Bulldog pitcher was in 1976 by Rob Cruess against Sacramento State. Gonzalez tied his career-high of seven strikeouts and threw seven innings, his longest outing of the season. Two walks stood between Gonzalez and a perfect game. The righty-handed pitcher faced just over the minimum of 22 batters and sat down 17 in order.
