Five MAAC Women's Basketball Players Named to All-Met Teams

New York - Five MAAC Women's Basketball players were named to the All-Met team by the Met Basketball Writers Association. Marist's Rachele Fitz, the 2009-10 Pepsi Max MAAC Player of the Year, and Fairfield's Stephanie Geehan, the 2009-10 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, were selected to the All-Met First Team. Iona's Thazina Cook, Manhattan's Michelle Pacheco, and Marist's Erica Allenspach earned Second Team honors.
Fitz averaged 17.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game this season while shooting 55.1% from the field and 86.8% from the free throw line. Fitz became the first women's player in MAAC history this season to be named Player of the Year in three consecutive seasons, as well as being named MAAC Tournament MVP twice. She also was named a First-Team Academic All-District I by ESPN the Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for the second time this season, while being named a Third Team Academic All-American. Fitz scored 2,447 points in her career, the most for any basketball player in Marist history. She also recorded 1,066 rebounds in four seasons, playing in 137 games. In her four years with the Red Foxes, Marist went 116-21 and won at least 28 games each season.
Geehan became the first player in MAAC women's basketball history to block 100 shots in a season. She has now amassed 269 career blocks, the most all-time in the conference. Geehan led the league with 3.4 blocks and 11.6 rebounds per game, marks that were both top five in the nation. Geehan was sixth in
the
conference, averaging 14.5 points per game. She was named MAAC Player of
the Week
four times.
Cook led the Gaels this season in scoring and was second on the squad in
rebounding and steals. She ranked sixth in the MAAC in scoring, seventh
in rebounding, and tenth in steals and was nationally ranked in three
statistical categories. During her senior campaign, Cook set new career
highs in points, rebounds, assists, field goals, and three-point field
goals. She was a First Team All-MAAC selection and earned a position on
the All-Tournament Team.
Pacheco led the league with 5.0 assists per game. She was also
ranked in
the top-10 in the league with 2.7 steals per game (2nd), 15.3 points
per game (4th), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2), a 40.9% field-goal
percentage (6th), and a 75.5% free throw percentage (6th).
She was selected as the MAAC Player of the Week once last season.
Allenspach was an All-MAAC First Team selection this season after leading the conference in three-point shooting. The junior made 43.9% of her three-point attempts during the regular season. She was also second in the MAAC in assist-turnover ratio at 2.2, fourth in free throw percentage at 82.1%, and fifth in assists with 3.6 per game. Allenspach was the Red Foxes' third-leading scorer during the 2009-10 season, averaging 12.9 points per game. She was also named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team for the second straight season.
The All-Met players and coaches will be honored Wednesday evening, April 21, at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, N.Y.
