Newman, Shomo Awarded April Golfer of the Month Accolades

Edison, NJ – Iona’s Dylan Newman was chosen as the MAAC Men’s Golfer of the Month for April, while Siena’s Catherine Shomo was awarded the MAAC Women’s Golfer of the Month award.
Newman, a freshman from New Rochelle, N.Y., has been the Gaels’ top finisher in all four tournaments this spring. At the Lafayette Invitational, Newman tied for 10th with a two round score of 151 (+7), leading the Gaels to a seventh place finish. At the Navy Spring Invitational, Newman finished tied for tenth once again, shooting 149 (+7) in two rounds as the team finished eighth out of 21 squads. Newman tied for first at the Peacock Invitational before a playoff separated his tie. Newman shot a one-under 71 as the Gaels finished second overall. At the Northeast Invitational, Iona finished eighth out of 11 squads with Newman shooting a six-over 77 at the rain shortened event.
A junior from Rutland, Vermont, Siena tri-captain Catherine Shomo had a sensational month of April for the Saints, recording a pair of top-five finishes. Shomo led Siena to a second place finish at the Dartmouth Invitational, placing tied for third overall with rounds of 79 and a career-low 71 in the final round. She followed that up with scores of 79 and 72 in leading Siena to a fourth place finish at the Columbia Roar-ee Invitational.
The 2010 Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will be held April 30th-May 2nd at Celebration Golf Club in Celebration, Florida.
