Ferrante, Sun Earn MAAC Tennis Weekly Awards

Edison, NJ – Fairfield’s Rob Ferrante was selected as the MAAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while Marist’s Joana Sun earned the women’s award.

Ferrante, a junior from Yorktown Heights, New York, helped the Stags to a 3-1 week by going a combined 7-1. At third singles, Ferrante went 3-1 on the week. At second doubles, Ferrante and partner Ryan Berthod were a perfect 4-0 to bring their winning streak to eight matches. Ferrante began the week by posting the match-winning point in the Stags 4-3 win at Villanova; Ferrante defeated Connor Witty, 6-2, 6-3. In the Stags 6-1 win over Hofstra, Ferrante downed Johan Vila 6-2, 6-1. Against NJIT, Ferrante topped Fraser Croad, 6-4, 6-1. In doubles, Ferrante and Berthod defeated Villanova's pair 8-4, topped Bryant's pair 8-2, defeated Hofstra's pair 8-0, and edged out NJIT's pair 9-7 to win the point. Ferrante is 13-11 overall (11-5 dual) in singles and 19-13 (10-6 dual) in doubles. The Stags have captured six of their last seven matches and are 10-6 on the season.

Sun, a freshman from Gales Ferry, Connecticut, lost just one game in Marist’s 6-1 MAAC victory over Manhattan on March 30. She shutout Christina Ton in the first set 6-0 and won the second set 6-1. Sun has won four of her last five matches, two of which have been against conference foes. The freshman also won her doubles match against Manhattan as she paired with classmate Kelsey Raynor at the top spot to best Lili Johnson and Stephanie Tsao, 8-5. She has played at first doubles since joining the team and has won four of her last five matches in doubles as well.

The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will take place from April 23rd through April 25th at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
