INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Iona College freshman Doug Hoppe has been selected to participate at the Notre Dame Regional in the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships. Hoppe took the individual title at the 2010 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Golf Championships, shooting a final round 74 to finish with a score of 220, four strokes better than the four golfers who finished tied for second.
Hoppe was one of six individual competitors selected to the Notre Dame Regional. Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 20-22. Thirteen teams and ten individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
Hoppe won the McLeod Memorial Award with rounds of 72, 74, and 74. The award is named after Charles "Scott" McLeod, a 1980 graduate of Iona College, who passed away in 1985 after a life-long fight with kidney-related ailments. McLeod was also a lifetime member of the Pelham Country Club, where the MAAC Tournament was held in the middle 1980's, and was a sponsor of the tournament the first year it was held at Pelham.
