Top-Seeded Maryland Takes Down Marist, 20-5, in First Round of 2010 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The top-seeded Maryland Terrapins outshot the Marist women's lacrosse team 29-4 in the first half on its way to an 11-2 halftime advantage before defeating the Red Foxes 20-5 at Ludwig Field in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship Saturday. Marist finishes the season with a record of 10-8 after winning its second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title and making its first NCAA Tournament appearance.

Sophomore attack Kelly Condon (Roslyn, Pa.) led Marist with four goals. Ariel Kramer (Syracuse, N.Y.) had Marist's other goal and two assists.

Maryland (18-1) got on the board 35 seconds into the game, as Katie Schwarzmann put a Brandi Jones pass in the goal. Marist (10-8) withstood an early barrage of Terrapin shots to keep the game 1-0 five minutes in. The Red Foxes, however, converted on only two of four clears as Maryland dominated possession early. Maryland made the score 2-0 with 20:16 to go in the first on a Sarah Mollison free-position shot goal.

The Terrapins took a 4-0 lead at the 19:44 mark when Karri Ellen Johnson scored back-to-back goals for Maryland, prompting a Marist timeout. The Red Foxes got on the board with 18:43 to go in the first half when Condon attacked the cage to score her 41st goal of the season. Maryland grew its lead back to four, 5-1, at the 17:47 mark on Johnson's second goal of the game. The Terrapins scored again 38 seconds later, with Kate Faas making the score 6-1. Maryland scored five more goals before Kramer fed Condon for her second goal of the game to get within nine, 11-2, with seven seconds left in the half. For the first 30 minutes, Maryland outshot the Red Foxes 29-4 and committed only five turnovers to 16 for Marist.

Marist scored first in the second half, as Kramer scored with an assist from senior Lindsay Rinefierd (Smithtown, N.Y.) to make the score 11-3 with 28:21 to go in the game. Maryland quickly responded 14 seconds later with a Brittany Jones tally to take a 12-3 lead. Condon earned her hat trick at the 26:48 mark of the second, with an assist from Kramer to make the score 12-4. Maryland then scored the next five goals to go up by 13, 17-4, with 12:20 to go in the game to put the contest out of reach.

Maryland outshot Marist 46-11 for the game, forcing 22 Red Fox turnovers. The Terrapins also held a 16-10 advantage in ground balls. Both
Ashley Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.) and Alyssa Littin (Coronado, Calif.) made four saves in goal for Marist. Johnson led Maryland with five goals, as Mollison and Amanda Spinnenweber each had hat tricks for the Terrapins.
