Newman, Shomo Awarded September Golfer of the Month Accolades

Edison, NJ - Iona's Dylan Newman was chosen as the MAAC Men's Golfer of the Month for September, while Siena's Catherine Shomo was awarded the MAAC Women's Golfer of the Month award.
Newman, a sophomore from New Rochelle, New York, was the top performer for the Gaels at their first three tournaments of the season. Newman's best round came at The McLaughlin where he shot 66 for the low round of the day. He tied for seventh overall at the tournament. Newman led the Gaels to a third place finish at the Rehoboth Beach Fall Invitational. He tied with two other golfers for second with a score of 70 (-1). He was one of only seven golfers to shoot even or better.
Shomo, a senior from Rutland, Vermont, placed in the top-10 in all three of Siena's tournaments while shooting all eight of her rounds in the 70's. Shomo, whose average round for the month was a 74.9, finished tied for ninth at the Bucknell Invitational, tied for third at Dartmouth and fifth at the Yale Intercollegiate. Her most impressive performance came at Yale where she played despite an injury that almost forced her to miss the entire tournament. She still managed to shoot her lowest round of the fall with a 71 during the second round.
The 2011 Men's and Women's Golf Championships will be held April 29th-May 1st at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
