TERRE HAUTE, IN - Senior Leonard Korir earned first place individual honors and led the No. 5 Iona College men's cross country team to a third place finish at the 2011 Pre-National Invitational hosted by Indiana State. Korir finished the 8k event in 23:55.
Korir finished three seconds ahead of Colorado's Andrew Wacker to take the individual title. Junior Matt Bayley finished ninth (24:22) while senior Alexander Soderberg (24:31) was 12th overall.
Rounding out Iona's scorers were senior Mitch Goose (25th) and sophomore Chris Stogsdill (63rd).
The Gaels finished behind No. 8 Colorado (82 pts) and No. 12 Portland (104 pts) in the team standings. Following Iona's 109 points were No. 29 Eastern Kentucky (186), No. 11 Florida State (186) to round out the top five.
The championship portion of the schedule is up next for the Gaels. In two weeks, Iona seeks its 21st straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship on Oct. 28 at Van Cortlandt Park
