Baxter, Medina, Cavallaro and Gongloff Honored With Weekly Awards

Edison, NJ - Niagara University's Shane Baxter was named the
MAAC Men's Swimmer of the Week, while Siena College's Jacque Medina earned the award on the women's side. Rider
University's Brendon Cavallaro was chosen as the Men's Diver of the Week and Iona
College's Briana Gongloff was selected as the Women's Diver of the Week.
Baxter, a freshman from Ottawa, broke the
Niagara University 100-yard backstroke record, clocking in at 52.08 against
Cleveland State University in the Niagara's home opening meet on Oct. 15. He beat the previous record by .68 seconds. Baxter
was also the lead leg of the 200-yard medley relay that finished second, just
.54 seconds behind the winning Cleveland group. To round out the meet, he placed second in the
200-yard IM (2:00.10). During the Oct.21
meet against the Fredonia Blue Devils, Baxter helped the men tally their first
win of the season by winning the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:01.66. He captured the 100-yard backstroke with a
time of 52.05, breaking his own program record by .3 seconds. Baxter was also the lead leg of the 200-yard
medley relay that posted a time of 1:39.33.
Medina, a freshman from Norman, Okla., won four events at this weekend's
Northeast Catholic Invitational at Boston College. She won the 1,000 free (10:46.18) by over six
seconds, in addition to the 200 free (2:00.17), 500 free (5:17.93), and 400
free relay (3:47.01, split unavailable). Siena went 5-1 in the dual-meet
portion of the event, losing only to the host Eagles.
Cavallaro, a senior from Middleboro, Mass., won
the men's three-meter dive with a score of 335.85 and finished second in the one-meter
with a score of 262.73 in a dual meet against Seton Hall.
Gongloff, a junior from Monroeville, Pa., finished third in the one-meter
diving event at the New England Catholic Invitational Swim Meet with a strong
early season total of 211.15 points, and placed fourth in the three-meter event
with 189.10 points.
The 2012 MAAC Swimming & Diving
Championships will be held Thursday, February 16 through Saturday, February 18,
2012 at Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY, hosted by Canisius College and
Niagara University.
