New Rochelle, N.Y. - In support of our military personnel
who are giving faithful service in Iraq and Afghanistan, Iona
gives back to them to show love, compassion and gratitude as well as recognize
our President, Dr. Joseph Nyre's service in the United States Navy at this time
of Inauguration.
There were 3 ways in which the Iona
Community including various athletic teams supported the efforts toward peace
and justice, a visible sign of the values embraced by the mission of Iona College. They purchased items and deposited them in
the military hummer or athletics van located at the LaPenta Student Union which
Kicked-off at 1:15 pm,
Saturday, October 22 during Homecoming through the Inauguration festivities on
Friday, October 28. They sponsored a Box
- monetary donations which helped to pay shipping costs. The cost of shipping one box was $15. Lastly, they wrote a card/letter to be
included in the packages. Being sure to include
their email or return address. Letters from Iona College
accompanied all of the packages sent to the troops.
On Saturday and Sunday, October 22nd
and 23rd members of various athletics teams manned the military
humvee and the athletic van, collecting items and supplies for the troops. Teams and pairs of students sat at the vehicles
in 2 hour shifts. Participants had a
great time helping out. This event was a
great way for the Iona Community to give back to our troops.
