Machado and Hymes Named Men's Basketball Players of the Week
MAAC Sports
Player of the Week
Scott Machado, Iona, Sr., G, 6-1, 180, Queens, N.Y./St. Benedict's Prep (N.J.)
Machado had three double-doubles, recording 46 points (15.3/g), 41 assists (13.7/g), a 51.5% shooting effort from the field and just six turnovers (2.0/g) at this weekend's 5-Hour Energy Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Machado had 14 points, 11 assists vs. Purdue; 17 points, 15 assists vs. Western Michigan; and 15 and 15 with no turnovers vs. Maryland. In Machado's three double-doubles, he shattered the tournament's record of 22 set in 2008 by USC's Daniel Hackett. The single game mark entering the weekend was 10 in last year's championship game by West Virginia's Joe Mazzulla. Machado eclipsed the mark in each game this season. The two 15 assist efforts matched his career-high from a year ago.
Rookie of the Week
Evan Hymes, Siena, Fr., G, 5-8, 147, Durham, N.C./Kestrel Heights Charter
Hymes averaged 20 points while shooting 52% from the field and 50% from 3-point range in the first two games of his collegiate career. The point guard's marquee effort came in his first road game when he scored 30 points at Mount St. Mary's, the most by a Siena freshman in a game since February of 2005. Hymes made 9-17 field goals and 3-5 3-pointers in the 12-point win. Forced into the starting rotation in his collegiate debut against Navy due to a season-ending back injury to Rakeem Brookins, Hymes turned the ball over just three times total in Siena's two wins to start the year. More impressive, Hymes left both games early due to leg cramps, and averaged just 28.5 minutes per game.
