Rider's Smith Named NCBWA Preseason All-America

WICHITA, KANSAS - The 12th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-America teams were announced Wednesday and Rider University junior Tyler Smith was on the Second Team.
 
Smith (Westmont, N.J. /Haddon Township), a left-handed relief pitcher, was an All-East closer last year for the Broncs.
 
In 2011 Smith, the MAAC and New Jersey Relief Pitcher of the Year, was tenth in the nation in saves with a Rider and league record 15 and possessed a 2.58 earned run average.
 
Smith had 41 strikeouts in 38.1 innings last year and opponents batted just .190 against him.
 
In his two-year career at Rider Smith has compiled 24 saves and owns a 9-7 record.  He has a 3.03 career earned run average with 82 strikeouts in 89 innings.
 
Three relief pitchers, from Oregon State, Mississippi State and Texas, were on the NCBWA First Team. Relief pitchers on the Second Team with Smith played for Texas Tech and Florida. On the Third Team were relief pitchers from Purdue, NC State and Georgia State.
