St. Louis, Mo. - Fairfield University head coach Ed Cooley has been named the 2010-2011 Men's District I Coach of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, based on voting from its national membership.

Cooley was named the 2010-2011 The Rock MAAC Coach of the Year earlier this month. In his fifth season as head coach of the Stags, he has led his team to an overall mark of 24-7. Cooley also led his team to finish this year's MAAC schedule at 15-3, en route to earning Fairfield's first MAAC regular season crown in 15 years and the top seed in the 2011 Spark Energy MAAC Men's Basketball Championship.

In addition, Fairfield sophomore guard Derek Needham was named to the All District Team for District I, which includes schools from the states of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Needham, who also earned a spot on the 2010-2011 All-MAAC First Team, is currently ranked sixth in scoring with 14.0 points per game and third in assists with 4.5 an outing for the Stags. A two-time MAAC Player of the Week this season, Needham posted double figures in 24 out of 31 games played this season.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. Today, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball.
