Fairfield Faces Iona in Championship Round on Saturday

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Top-seeded Fairfield University will take on fourth-seeded Iona College in the championship round of the 2011 MAAC Softball Championship on Saturday, May 14, starting at noon at Softball Park at Gartland Field on the campus of Marist College.

Iona is the designated home team for game six. If the Gaels win game six, then the seventh and deciding game will be played at 2:00 p.m. Fairfield will be the designated home team for game seven, if necessary.

The Stags and the Gaels faced each other in game two of this week's championship, with Fairfield earning a 2-1 victory over Iona. Senior designated player Alyssa Maiese led off the second inning with a home run over the center field fence to give Iona a 1-0 lead. Fairfield recorded two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman second baseman Kristen Filicia scored on a groundout by senior first baseman Kristina Lingo, followed by an RBI bunt by junior third baseman Alli Wigand to bring in freshman catcher Lauren Liseth. Fairfield's Sarah Minice claimed the win, striking out six and giving up three hits in 7.0 innings of work.

Tickets for the 2011 MAAC Softball Championship can be purchased in advance at www.TicketLeap.com or at the gate. All-session passes are available for $25. Single-session admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children and students.

The winner of the 2011 MAAC Softball Championship will receive an automatic berth to the 2011 NCAA Division I Softball Championship.
