Three Named to Capital One Academic All-America Baseball Teams

Canisius College junior infielder Drew Petit and senior infielder Sean Jamieson as well as Marist College senior outfielder Ricky Pacione were named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Baseball Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Petit earned a spot on the first team for the University Division, while Jamieson and Pacione were named to the second team. The Capital One Academic All-America® University Division first team has three student-athletes with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. The eleven members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.89.

Pettit led the MAAC in conference play with a .423 batting average. The economics major ranks fifth in the MAAC with 66 hits on the season. Entering the postseason, Pettit is hitting .344 with 32 runs scored, 11 doubles, six home runs and 38 RBI. The Griffs' starting third baseman has committed three errors in the last 34 games, recording a .974 fielding percentage during that stretch. Pettit is hitting .423 with runners in scoring position.

Jamieson leads Canisius in most offensive categories as the team's starting shortstop is hitting .358 with 67 hits, 13 home runs, 49 RBI, a .658 slugging percentage, .474 on-base percentage and 22 stolen bases. Jamieson was a two-time MAAC Player of the Week and was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week on March 28. The biology major was one of 25 shortstops named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List.

Pacione, who majored in Business Administration/Finance, was named Academic All-District each of the last three seasons. He was a Second Team selection as a sophomore in 2009, and earned First Team honors each of the last two years.  Pacione led the Red Foxes in batting average (.376), on-base percentage (.471) and total bases (101). He added three home runs, 33 runs batted in, 41 runs scored, 14 doubles, a triple and seven stolen bases. Pacione finished his career by starting 204 consecutive games.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
