Outdoor Track & Field Weekly Honors Awarded to Korir and Olsson
MAAC Sports
Edison, NJ - Outdoor Track
& Field Performer of the Week honors were awarded to Leonard Korir of Iona
College and Malin Olsson of Manhattan College.
Korir
was the second collegiate finisher and eighth overall in the Kim McDonald
Memorial 10,000m race at the Peyton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford
University. Korir shattered the Iona
school record by over a minute, running a 27:29.40. The time also bested the Olympic Games
"A" standard by over 10 seconds.
He broke former standout Mohammed Khadrouai's school record of 28:34.19
set at the same meet three years ago.
The time was a personal best, IC4A qualifier and currently puts him on
the top of the NCAA East list and 2nd on the overall NCAA list as Arizona's
Steven Sambu finished just in front of Korir at Stanford.
Olsson won the bronze medal
in the long jump Championship of America at the 117th Penn Relays. Sitting in sixth place after five jumps,
Olsson uncorked a personal-best leap of 6.12 meters (20 feet, one inch) on her
final attempt to move into third. She
became just the second Manhattan woman ever to clear 20 feet in the long
jump. Then on Saturday at the Lions
Invitational, Olsson ran the anchor leg on the 4 x 100 meter relay squad that
qualified for the ECAC Championships with a time of 47.79 seconds.
The 2011 MAAC
Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be hosted May 7-8 at Rider
University in Lawrenceville, NJ.
