NCAA Men's Tennis Championship Bracket

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men’s tennis team (18-3) will face #14 overall seed Cal (12-7) in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship, it was announced Tuesday. The Red Foxes will face the Bears in Berkeley, Calif., on Friday, May 13 at 5 p.m. EDT at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

This is the Red Foxes’ ninth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, and their fourth in as many years. Marist enters the tournament having won 10 straight matches.

Marist clinched its NCAA Tournament berth with a 6-0 victory over Fairfield on April 21. Junior Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, and a victory by sophomore Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) clinched the victory for the Red Foxes.

Cal, a member of the Pac-10, has three nationally-ranked singles players in Pedro Zerbini (#20), Carlos Cueto (#64) and Nick Andrews (#96). The doubles team of Andrews and Christoffer Konigsfeldt is ranked #23, while the tandem of Cueto and Jonathan Dahan is #87.

Last season, Cal defeated UC Irvine in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to UCLA in the second round. This will be Cal’s 46th appearance in the tournament; the Bears won the national title in 1925.

The winner of the Marist-Cal match will play the winner of the Fresno State-Minnesota match in the second round at 6 p.m. EDT on Saturday, May 14. Tickets for adults are $10, while youth, student and senior citizen tickets are $5.
