Canisius Prepares for NCAA Championship Play-In Game at UMass

Edison, NJ - Canisius, the 2011 MAAC Women's Lacrosse champions, will face the #14-ranked University of Massachusetts in an NCAA Championship Play-In Game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 7. The contest will be played at McGuirk Stadium in Amherst, Mass.

Canisius earned the league's automatic qualifier after defeating top-seeded Fairfield in the championship for its first conference title. The Golden Griffins (14-5, 5-1 MAAC) non-conference schedule featured games against nationally ranked opponents in Stanford, Albany, Vanderbilt, and Ohio State.

UMass won its third consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship with a 16-12 victory over Richmond in the title game. The Minutewomen enter the game with an overall record of 16-2 (7-0 A-10) with their two losses coming against #3 Northwestern and #8 Albany.

The two teams shared six common opponents during the regular season with identical results. Both teams beat Siena, Marist, Duquesne, and St. Bonaventure, while losing to Albany. Canisius beat Siena a second time in the MAAC Semifinals, while UMass eliminatd Duquesne in the same round of the Atlantic-10 Championship.

The 2011 Women's Lacrosse Selection Show will air live on NCAA.com at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 8.
