NCAA Women's Tennis Championship Bracket
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - After they won their third MAAC Tournament on April 21, the Marist women's tennis team learned it will travel to Athens, Ga. to play the eighth-seeded University of Georgia Bulldogs in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament, as the bracket was announced during the NCAA Selection Show on Tuesday.
The Red Foxes and Bulldogs will play on Saturday, May 14 at noon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children.
As a team, the Red Foxes (13-7) enter the tournament on a seven match winning streak and have won nine of ten dating back to April 2.
Freshman Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) clinched the 2011 MAAC Championship with his win at fourth singles over Fairfield's Nikki Jackson, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. She was named the championship's Most Outstanding Performer for her 2-0 mark against #3 Loyola and #1 Fairfield.
Georgia (16-4) enters the NCAA Tournament as a two-time NCAA champion, who won team titles in 1994 and 2000. The Bulldogs are led by 2010 NCAA singles champion Chelsey Gullickson. At the SEC tournament, two members of their squad were named to First Team All-SEC; Gullickson and Maho Kowase and three to Second Team All-SEC; Cameron Ellis, Kate Fuller and Lilly Kimbell.
The other half of the Athens bracket includes a matchup between the University of Alabama and the University of Utah.
Stanford enters the NCAA Tournament as the defending NCAA champion and overall #1 seed. Their 2010 championship was Stanford's 16th title, the most in NCAA women's tennis history.
