Canisius College senior Sean Jamieson was one of 10 shortstops to make the cut for the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List. The semifinalists were released by the College Baseball Hall of Fame, which presents the award to the top shortstop in the country.
Jamieson, a 17th-round draft choice of the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday, became the third Golden Griffin in program history to be named MAAC Player of the Year, as he shared the award with Dan Paolini of Siena. The two-time All-MAAC First-Team selection started 57 games at shortstop this season, leading Canisius in batting average (.350), runs scored (60), home runs (13), RBI (51), walks (34) and stolen bases (22). Jamieson ranked in the top five in the MAAC in eight offensive categories.
Jamieson also earned Capital One Academic All-America Second-Team honors and was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week (March 28). He was a two-time MAAC Player of the Week as well. Jamieson hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning against Buffalo on March 30. On March 22, he became the first Golden Griffin to hit for the cycle in 15 years and also set a program record with nine RBI in that game.
The watch list now features shortstops from eight different conferences, with Jamieson being the only selection from the MAAC. The Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation's top shortstop and will be presented on July 3, in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Night of Champions.
College Baseball's Night of Champions not only features the presentation of the Brooks Wallace Award, but also the announcements of the National Pitcher of the Year, John Olerud Two-way Player of the Year, Johnny Bench Award and Dick Howser Trophy. Also included is the 2011 induction of the National College Baseball Hall of Fame class.
