BALTIMORE - Recent Loyola University Maryland graduate Tim Burns was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America Cross Country/Track and Field First team on Tuesday in celebration of his academic and athletic accomplishments throughout his career.
Burns graduated last month with a perfect 4.0 grade point average inmechanical engineering. He is one of 15 student-athletes from NCAA Division I cross country or track and field programs to be named to the first team.
"Tim is a tremendous example of a student-athlete," Loyola Assistant Vice President/Director of Athletics Jim Paquette said. "He has excelled in sport and the classroom through his time at Loyola, and this award represents the best of both in all of Division I."
The native of Randolph, N.J., was one of the Loyola cross country team's top runners as a senior. He was a three-time MAAC All-Academic honoree and earned Academic All-District II honors last year, as well.
At Loyola's Athletic Awards Banquet on May 2, Burns received two honors. He earned the Men's Medal of Merit for combined accomplishments in athletics and academics, and he was the senior male student-athlete with the highest grade point average.
Burns later won two awards at the University's Special Awards & Departmental Medals Ceremony. He received the Mary O'Meara Loyola University Maryland Athletic ClubScholar-Athlete Award as the graduating senior who has attained the highestacademic average and earned at least three varsity letters.
He then garnered the Engineering Medal for excellence in his field of study.
