Iona's Wood and Leonard Named ACWPC All-American Honorable Mention

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College women's water polo graduate Maggie Wood (Evergreen Park, IL / Mother McAuley HS) and rising senior Cecilia Leonard (Plantation, FL / South Plantation HS) were named 2011 ACWPC Women's Water Polo All-American Honorable mention for their performance during the Gaels historic run this past spring. Leonard and Wood become the first performers in program history to earn All-American honors.

The Maroon & Gold finished the season at No. 19, a program-best, on the final CWPA Women's Varsity national poll. At the 2011 NCAA Championship, the Gaels claimed eighth place in their first-ever appearance in the tournament. The squad finished with a perfect 10-0 record in MAAC play en route to a 26-10 overall record. The 26 victories eclipsed the previous program record of 24 set in 2009.

Wood led the nation in points and goals scored posting an NCAA-record 119 tallies to go along with her 38 points for an Iona and MAAC record 157 total points. Wood out performed the No. 2 player on the list, Cal Baptist's Petra Kovacs who posted 108 goals and 153 points. She was also named the 2011 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, the MAAC Championship's Most Outstanding Performer as well as the NCAA's All-Tournament team.

Leonard finished No. 2 on the team in points scored with 135 with 60 goals and 75 assists. She ranked No. 2 in the MAAC and No. 4 on the NCAA list with her point total. Her 48 steals ranked No. 19 in the nation and second in the MAAC behind classmate Mackenzie Mone's team-best 68. Leonard was named to the All-MAAC First Team and MAAC All-Tournament team prior to the Gaels NCAA Championship appearance.
