Offensive Player of the Week
Nichole Schiro, Loyola, Jr., Forward, 5-9, Okemos, Mich./Okemos
Schiro played a strong offensive game in the Greyhounds' 2-0 loss at Towson. She had three shots, including two on net. The junior generated several quality scoring chances for Loyola. Early in the contest, Schiro navigated through the Towson defense and beat keeper Jocelyn Papciak, but the shot was blocked by a Towson defender, who cleared the ball away just before the ball crossed the goal line. She also placed a header on net and was robbed of a goal in the second half on a diving save by Papciak. Schiro also impacted the game with her passing, setting up Gabrielle Tana for a quality attempt that went just wide.
Defensive Player of the Week
Kelly Boudreau, Fairfield, Sr., Goalkeeper, 5-8, Farmington, Conn./Farmington
Boudreau and the Stags' defense kept the offense of fourth-ranked Boston College nearly in check on Sunday afternoon in the squads' season opener. She made five saves on the afternoon, allowing just one goal - a 25-yard bomb that slid just under the cross bar. Boudreau also disrupted the Eagles' attack several times, coming off of the line to knock balls away before they could be taken as dangerous shots. She also excelled in the kicking game, booming balls on both goal kicks and punts.
Rookie of the Week
Gabrielle Tana, Loyola, Fr., Midfield, 5-2, Baltimore, Md./Maryvale Prepatory
Tana provided a much needed spark off the bench for the Greyhounds in her first collegiate action. The freshman played in the midfield for the Greyhounds in a 2-0 loss to Towson, but helped generate scoring opportunities for Loyola in the second the half. Tana controlled the midfield and played solid defense from her outside mid position. The Baltimore, Md., native came inches away from tying the game in the second half, starting a counter attack with solid defense and then firing a shot just wide of the Towson goal.
