New Rochelle, NY - On Saturday,
September 10, 2011 Iona College Women's Water Polo team volunteered
for a non profit organization called MAC
Angels. The organization raises money for families coping with ALS as well as supporting research. There was an
event at the Hudson River on Saturday,
September 10th that was held by MAC
Angels as well as three other cancer societies. It was a competitive 1.5 mile
swim through the Hudson River. We arrived at
about 7 a.m. and helped set
up tents, tables, and merchandise. When the swimmers began showing up, we
helped check them in and made sure they had everything they needed and knew
where to go for the start of the race. While the race was going on we were
stationed at the finish line for support and a few of the girls helped check
the participants in and give them their times. Watching the end of the race was
extremely rewarding because men and women of every age had been able to
complete it. One man in particular swam the entire mile and a half with only
one leg and one arm, the amazing thing is they were missing on the same side,
how he did it is beyond me. After the race we helped break everything down and
carry things back to the truck and we were finished at about 1 p.m. Over all it was an extremely rewarding
experience and the people there was very nice and extremely grateful for our
help. All of us would be excited to help them out again next year.
