New Rochelle, N.Y. - The Iona
Men's Water Polo team volunteered at the 2012 Jarden Triathlon. It took place
on September 23, 2012. The team left Iona at 4am and arrived at the location at
around 4:30am and returned to Iona at 11am after the triathlon ended.
At the
triathlon, the team held many jobs and responsibilities. They were in charge of
setting up a lot of the stations around the main site. Many of the Iona
Athletes were carrying boxes of food and water from station to station at
5:30am in the morning. A small group were put on a boat and helped set up the
swimming course. Before the events started, they also cleaned the beach up of
all trash and debris. Throughout the day the team handed out water, food, and
cheers to the participants.
Over
1,500 professional and amateur athletes from around the world competed in the
event, which consists of a 9/10ths mile swim in Long Island Sound; a 25 mile
scenic bike course; and a 6.2 mile run through Rye. This race is also a qualifier for the popular
"Escape to Alcatraz" triathlon. Now in its 28th year, the event is one of the
northeast's major Olympic distance races, awarding over $10,000 in prize money
to male and female winners, as well as generous donations to charitable causes.
