Two MAAC Men's Lacrosse Players Head to NLL

Edison, N.J. - Two former
MAAC Men's Lacrosse players were drafted into the National Lacrosse League on
Monday, October 1. The two players are Canisius College's Simon Giourmetakis
and University of Detroit Mercy's Joel Matthews.
Giourmetakis, a native of Alberta, Canada was drafted to the Edmonton
Rush in the fourth round with an the 33rd overall pick. Giourmetakis
was a two time first-team All-MAAC honoree and led the Griffs to their second
conference title in 2012 with 47 points and 34 goals in 2012, ranking him first
in the MAAC and 17th nationally with 2.43 goals per game.
Matthews, a native of St. Catharines, Ohio was drafted in the fourth
round - 31st overall - by the Buffalo Bandits. Matthews is the first
Titan to be drafted into professional lacrosse. He was named to the 2012
Tewaaraton Award Watch List and is the Titan's all-time leader in points per
game (3.48) and goals per game (2.44).
The National Lacrosse League is
a professional indoor lacrosse league in North America that was founded in
1987. It currently has nine teams with three based in Canada (Calgary, Edmonton
& Toronto) and six in the United States (Buffalo, Colorado, Minnesota,
Philadelphia, Rochester & Washington), and each team plays a 16-game
schedule in hopes of reaching the playoffs and playing for the Champions Cup,
won by Rochester in 2012.
