Former Siena Standout Ubiles Signs with Wizards
Siena Sports Information
The Washington Wizards have signed former Siena standout Edwin Ubiles to a 10-day contract. Ubiles is with the team tonight in Memphis, and should he play, he would be the first ex-Saint to appear in an NBA game.
Ubiles, a 6-6 guard/forward from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., was called up from the NBA Developmental League. The Wizards confirmed the transaction on their official twitter page just before 5 p.m. Sunday evening.
Ubiles was viewed as one of the top prospects in the D-League where he averaged 20.4 points per game for the Dakota Wizards (Bismarck, N.D.), and was selected to participate in the league's All-Star game (Feb. 25). He scored 41 points in a game vs. Iowa Feb. 27.
Ubiles scored 1,939 points in his four years with the program, the third most in Siena history. He also grabbed 560 rebounds (18th), dished out 273 assists (16th), had 157 steals (9th) and 95 blocked shots (10th). Ubiles shot 50% from the field for his career, and averaged double figures in each of his four seasons, reaching double digits in 106 of the 131 games he played while scoring 20 points or more 32 times.
As a senior in 2009-10, Ubiles averaged 15.3 points per game and shot 40% from 3-point range despite sitting out four games due to injury. He helped the Saints to MAAC Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances three straight years (2008-10) and NCAA Tournament victories twice (2008 vs.
Vanderbilt, 2009 vs. Ohio State).
Ubiles caught the attention of several NBA teams this summer when he helped Puerto Rico to the Gold Medal in the Pan-American games. That performance helped earn him a spot in Golden State's Training Camp, where he was one of the last two cuts the Warriors made.
