MAAC Men's Player of the Week

BRANDON GALLEGOS, NIAGARA

Jr., 5-7, Santa Cruz, Calif./Apots High School

 

Junior Brandon Gallegos went 2-0 in singles and split a pair of doubles matches as Niagara went 2-0 in matches at Mount St. Mary's and Loyola over the weekend. Gallegos cruised to two singles wins to improve his mark to 5-3 in the spring season. The team captain defeated the Mount's Mike Zabetakis, 6-2, 6-1 in No. 3 singles and topped Loyola's Pierce Norton, 6-3, 6-1, in No. 2 singles in the Purple Eagles' conference opening win on Saturday. In doubles, Gallegos was edged in top doubles, 8-6, against the Mount, but he and his doubles partner David Raymond bounced back to defeat Loyola's Norton and Kevin Zingler in No. 1 doubles, 8-4.

 

MAAC Women's Player of the Week

SABRINA FEDELE, LOYOLA

So., Short Hills, N.J./Millburn

 

Fedele helped the Greyhounds to a 4-0 week, going undefeated in both singles and doubles matches. Fedele combined with partner Tiffany Ash to go 4-0 in doubles matches for the week. The pair won against Catholic University, 8-2, and followed that with a, 6-1, 6-1, win over La Salle's Courtney Babo and Pearl Wilkins. They also combined for a, 6-3, 6-1, victory over Jenna McClune and Rachel Zilka, helping Loyola to a win in the team's conference opener over Niagara. They finished the week  with an 8-2 win over Isabella Novella and Kourtney Passero of Robert Morris.

 

In singles play, Fedele dropped just one set while going 4-0 in the No. 3 slot. She started the week with a, 6-0, 6-0, sweep over Catholic University's Caitlin Porter, and then came from behind after losing the first set at La Salle to win, 3-6, 6-0, 8-1. Against Niagara, Fedele came up with the match-clinching point, beating Ashley Ta, 6-2, 6-3. Finally, Fedele beat Robert Morris' Samatha Alves, 6-3, 6-4, to help Loyola to is 26th-straight season with 10 or more wins.
