Gaels Women's Basketball "Give Back"

New Rochelle, N.Y. - As the Iona College women's basketball team returned to campus to begin the 2012-13 academic year, the team set a priority to "give back" as much as possible.

Wasting no time, the Gaels performed their first of many planned community service events on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, just one week into the start of the fall semester. The team participated in a study performed by Dr. Elizabeth M. Mullin, an Assistant Professor of Exercise Science within the Department of Kinesiology at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. The study investigated many social issues and attitudes related to athletics.

Following the event, senior captain Haley D'Angelo said, "We are provided with a great deal as student-athletes at Iona; therefore it is our responsibility to give back in any way we can. Community service events are one of the best ways that we can accomplish that."

Sophomore Aleesha Powell agreed with D'Angelo's sentiment, "We are grateful for all of the support that we receive and make it a priority to be as involved as possible, not only in our Iona community, but in the local community as well. We take pride in representing Iona College as best as we possibly can, at all times."

Dr. Mullin said, "I really appreciate Iona women's basketball's willingness to help improve the future of women's athletics."  She will be returning to campus for a follow up visit in the upcoming weeks. "We are pleased to be helping Dr. Mullin with her study, especially since the study's purpose is to better the field of athletics," said senior Diana Hubbard.
