MAAC Reveals Men’s Basketball Preseason Second Team

EDISON, NJ – The 2013-14 All- MAAC Preseason Men’s Basketball Second Team, chosen by the MAAC’s head coaches, includes four players who were honored as All-MAAC third team performers following last season.

Comprising the All-MAAC Preseason Second Team are Chavaughn Lewis and Adam Kemp of Marist,  Daniel Stewart and Anthony Myles of Rider, and Desi Washington of Saint Peter’s.

Lewis started all 31 games for the Red Foxes, and was Marist’s top scorer (16.7 points) and second leading rebounder (5.7 rebounds). The 6-5, 185-pound junior from Queens was the MAAC’s fourth leading scorer and also led the league with 2.0 steals per game. Lewis exploded for 30-points and grabbed 16 rebounds against VMI, and scored at least 20 points in 12 games last season en route to earning third team All-MAAC honors last year.

Lewis’ teammate Kemp also earned All-MAAC third team honors a year ago. The 6-10, 235-pound senior averaged 10.4 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, and closed the season on a high note as he averaged 17.3 points and 9.7 rebounds over the last nine contests. Kemp was third in the MAAC in rebounding, second in blocks shots with 2.2 per game, and first in field goal percentage, hitting .555 from the floor.

Stewart has been a solid presence inside for the Broncs throughout his career. He has played in 100 games at Rider, and has started 95. The 6-7, 215-pound senior earned third team All-MAAC honors last year, averaging 10.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest. Stewart, the MAAC’s Rookie of the Year in 2010-11, enters his senior season needing just 36 points to surpass the 1,000 point mark for his career.

The versatile Myles started all 34 games for the Broncs last season, and was 16th in the league in scoring (12.4 points), 15th in 3-point field goals made (57-167) and 18th in rebounding (4.6 rebounds). The 6-5, 205-pound guard was a third team All-MAAC selection last season, and enters his senior season needing 86 points to surpass the 1,000 point mark in his career.

In his first season at Saint Peter’s, Washington led the Peacocks in scoring (14.6 points) and added 3.4 rebounds per game. The 6-2, 175-pound Washington, a transfer from Delaware State, made his Peacocks’ debut against Rutgers in the first game of the season and scored 18 points in a 56-52 victory. He averaged over 34 minutes per game, and also contributed 1.4 steals per outing. He is the MAAC’s leading returning free throw shooter after hitting .880 of his shots from the charity stripe.

The MAAC will announce the 2013-14 MAAC Men’s Basketball Preseason All-MAAC First Team tomorrow.
