Damika Martinez Named MAAC Preseason Player of the Year

Edison, N.J. - Iona College junior guard Damika Martinez has been named the 2013-14 MAAC Women’s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year, as selected by the league's 11 head coaches.
After being named 2012-13 Pepsi Max MAAC Player of the Year and guiding the Iona College Gaels to a trip in the MAAC Championship final, Damika Martinez is unanimous pick as the Women’s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year. She finished 8th in the country in three-point field goal percentage, shooting 42.2% from behind the arc. Martinez led the MAAC in scoring, averaging 18.1 points per game and in three-pointers made, netting 79 threes on the season, an Iona single-season record. Along with being named Player of the Year, she was also selected to the All-MAAC First Team, All-MAAC Tournament Team, and All-Met First Team last season.
A native of Meriden, Conn., Martinez scored 598 points last season, clinching a spot in the MAAC record book, and has 1,095 points in her two-year career, good for 17th all-time in Iona College history. Her 17.1 points per game career average ranks 12th all-time in the MAAC record book and she ranks 9th in league history with her .380 career three-point field goal percentage. As a freshman, Martinez was named MAAC Rookie of the Year and was selected to the All-MAAC Second and Rookie Teams.
