Manhattan College has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Championship, according to a vote of the MAAC’s coaches. The Jaspers, who appeared in last year’s MAAC Championship game against Iona, received 10 of 11 first place votes and 119 points.
Picked to finish second was defending champion Iona, who edged Manhattan in last year’s MAAC championship game, with Canisius picked to finish third after coming off a 20-win season last year.

Canisius College senior guard Billy Baron was chosen as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year. Baron led the MAAC in assists with 5.0 per game and ranked third in scoring averaging 17.2 points per game. He also ranked third in the MAAC in assist/turnover ratio (+1.8), fifth in free throw percentage (.824), eighth in three-point field goal percentage (.382) and 10th in minutes played (34.8/game).
