MAAC Announces the 2013-14 Women's Basketball Preseason Third Team

Edison, N.J. - The MAAC announces the 2013-14 MAAC Women's Basketball Preseason Third Team, as selected by the league's 11 women’s basketball head coaches.
The Preseason Third Team includes Canisius College senior forward Jamie Ruttle, Iona College junior guard Aleesha Powell, Marist College senior forward Emma O’Connor, Monmouth University redshirt-senior guard/forward Chevannah Paalvast, and Saint Peter’s University senior guard Aziza May.
Jamie Ruttle of Burlington, Ontario, ranked 2nd on the Golden Griffins with 8.8 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game. The senior appeared in 30 games for Canisius and averaged 23.9 minutes per contest in 2012-13. Ruttle was named to the Preseason All-MAAC First Team last year and enters her final season with 882 points, third most by a Canisius post player in the Division I era.
Aleesha Powell helped guide the Gaels to the 2013 MAAC Championship title game last year. The Philadelphia, Pa. native was selected to the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team last year and finished the season ranked 3rd in scoring with 322 points for the Gaels. Powell ranked 5th in the league with 3.3 assists per game and 9th in steals with 1.8 per contest.
Emma O’Connor was an All-MAAC Third Team selection last season as Marist won its eighth consecutive MAAC championship. She led the Red Foxes with 4.7 rebounds per game and finished fourth on the team with 9.1 points per game. O’Connor finished the season ranked 5th in the MAAC with a .476 field goal percentage. The senior forward will look to win her fourth league title of her career this season.
MAAC newcomer, Chevannah Paalvast saw action in 28 games and started in 26 of them for the Monmouth University Hawks. She ranked 2nd on her team with 11.0 points per game and 3rd recording 4.9 rebounds per game. Paalvast returns for her redshirt-senior season as the leading scorer for the Hawks.
Aziza May was a member of the All-MAAC Third Team and All-Academic Team in 2012-13. She led the Peacocks in assists with 106 and assists per game with 3.8. May was 6th in the MAAC in assists to turnover ratio and ranked 11th in 3 point field goals made with 39. The senior guard from South Euclid, Ohio looks to help improve Saint Peter’s record entering her final collegiate season.
The MAAC will announce the 2013-14 MAAC Women’s Basketball Preseason All-MAAC Second Team tomorrow.
