EDISON, N.J. -- The Monmouth University women’s soccer team clinched the top seed in the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship with a 3-0 win at Saint Peter’s today.

The victory gives the Hawks an 8-0-1 MAAC record with one match remaining in conference play, at Quinnipiac on Saturday.

Fairfield clinched the second seed today with a 3-0 victory over Siena. The second place Stags raised their conference record to 7-1-1 and have one match remaining as well, against Rider on Saturday.

If both teams were to finish with an 8-1-1 record (Monmouth loss, Fairfield win on Saturday), Monmouth would win the tie-breaker based on regular season head to head competition. The Hawks defeated Fairfield 2-0 in their regular season match on October 5.

Freshman forward Julie Spracklin scored Monmouth’s first goal 10:25 into the match, with senior Dana Costello picking up the assist. Sophomore Brianne Boyle scored the Hawks’ second goal at the 24:35 mark, to give Monmouth a 2-0 lead at halftime. Junior Breynn Collazo scored Monmouth’s final goal less than a minute into the second half, assisted by Boyle.

The victory improved Monmouth, the No. 6 rated team in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Northeast Region, to 14-1-1 overall.

In Fairfield’s victory over Siena, freshman Brenna Brown scored what proved to be the game winner at the 67:34 mark after the teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half. Nikki Stanton added a goal at 80:20, and Ashley Small rounded out the scoring with at 83:02.

Fairfield improved to 11-5-1 overall.
