Edison, N.J. – The 2013 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships will be taking place this Friday, November 1st, at historic Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. The championship race will showcase more than 350 competitors from the 11 MAAC institutions. Manhattan College serves as this year’s host for the championships.
The Iona College Men’s Cross Country team will be looking to take home their 23rd consecutive MAAC title. In 2012, the Gaels took first at both the MAAC and the Northeast Regionals. The Gaels would later head into the NCAA Championships ranked second in the country. Iona’s runners, led by Clements, Clorley, and Gillespie, will be looking to finish the conference championship race as the first overall runner. Iona has had the most outstanding runner for 12 straight years at the MAAC championships.
Iona’s Women’s Cross Country team, led by Kate Avery, will be looking to take home their own championship title for a 9th consecutive season. The Gaels finished in first place last year in the MAAC, and have had the most outstanding runner in the championship race for eight consecutive years.
MAAC newcomers Monmouth & Quinnipiac look to dethrone Iona and begin their own winning tradition. Monmouth, lead by Khari Bowen and Amanda Eller, look to bring their success in last year’s NEC championship to the MAAC. Quinnipiac has their sights set on the MAAC championship title, led by sophomore Brendan Copley and senior Jessica Soja.
The Women's Cross Country teams will be kicking off the championship event at 12:00PM, followed soon after by the Men's Cross Country teams taking off at 12:45PM.
