LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – Senior midfielder Katie Griffin took advantage of a loose ball in front of the opposing goal box to tally the game’s lone score and give the 9th seeded Canisius women’s soccer team a 1-0 win over 8th seed Niagara in the opening round of the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports.

Griffin’s deciding goal came at 30:43 in the first half. Griffin’s goal came after her initial shot deflected off of Niagara goalie Claire Feiertag’s forearm, and Griffin recovered to send the loose ball into the net.

The victory put the Golden Griffins into the quarterfinal round of the championship. They will face top-seeded Monmouth on Friday at 2:15 p.m.  The Hawks, winners of the MAAC’s regular season title, drew an opening round bye.

Canisius’ senior goalkeeper made six saves while the Purple Eagles sophomore goalkeeper Claire Feiertag was credited with five saves. Both teams were credited with 13 shots.

The victory raised Canisius mark to 6-13-1, while Niagara concluded its season at 4-13-2.
