Women's Basketball First Weekly Awards Announced

MAAC Offensive Player of the Week

Damika Martinez, Iona

Jr., G, 5-7, Meriden, CT/Orville H. Platt

 

Junior guard Damika Martinez averaged 30.0 points, six rebounds and one steals over two games as the Gaels opened the 2013-14 season with a pair of contests at home.  Against Arizona, Martinez scored 35 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals. She followed it up with a 25 point, five rebound effort against Bowling Green the following day. Against the Wildcats, Martinez connected on 12 shots from the field, including five three pointers. With the Gaels trailing by three in the late moments of the second half, Martinez knocked down a game tying trifecta with seven seconds left to send the game to overtime.  In the extra frame, Martinez scored 10 points compared to the Wildcats' seven as a team as the Gaels secured the seven point victory, 82-75. Martinez connected on 10 more field goals against Bowling Green, including three more three pointers for her game high 25 points. She is currently shooting 46.8% from the field, and 53.3% from the outside.

 

MAAC Rookie of the Week

Meghan Donohue, Siena

Fr., F, 6-2, Mogadore, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban

 

The first Siena freshman to start a season-opener in five years, Meghan Donohue led the Saints with team highs of 13 points and six rebounds in her collegiate debut against two-time defending America East Champion UAlbany. Donohue shot 5-10 from the floor; all while being matched up against the Great Danes’ 6-9 center Megan Craig. Conversely, Donohue outplayed the Preseason All-America East selection, limiting her to just four points and five rebounds.
