Alvarado was a key for the Jaspers as they defeated La Salle 99-90 in double overtime in the season opener for both teams on Saturday. Alvarado scored 16 points, including a three-pointer in the second overtime session that gave Manhattan the lead for good over the Explorers, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 in 2013. Alvardo then hit teammate Emmy Andujar for an assist that extended Manhattan’s lead to six points with a minute left. He capped the afternoon by knocking down a pair of free throws to help seal the victory. Alvarado shot 5-of-8 from the field, hit 5-of-6 from the free throw line and added eight rebounds from his guard position. He also dished off a team-high six assists.

JOSH JAMES, Monmouth

Making his collegiate debut for the Hawks, James came off the bench to score 19 points and help Monmouth to a 88-84 win at Hofstra on Saturday. James scored 15 of his points in the second half as Monmouth came back from a 13-point deficit. James added six assists, four rebounds and a blocked shot while seeing 22 minutes of action. He hit 6-of-10 from the field, and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
