Five Named to NFHCA All-Region Teams

EDISON, N.J. – Five student-athletes from four MAAC Field Hockey programs were honored by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) when the 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Region teams  were announced yesterday.

Senior Jess Rusin from Quinnipiac University headlined for the MAAC as a member of the Mid-East Region First Team while teammate Amanda Danziger and Robert Morris University’s Jamie Hartley were named to the Mid-East Region Second Team. Seniors Alex Carroll from Monmouth University and Sandra Penas from Rider University were named to the Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team.

Rusin, a senior from Garwood, N.J., was named the 2013 MAAC Co-Player of the Year and 2013 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year. She scored a goal in the Bobcat’s 5-0 win over Bryant University in the MAAC Championship Semifinal to eventually lead Quinnipiac to the championship title. The senior forward scored Quinnipiac’s lone goal in the NCAA Tournament against No. 18 American University. Rusin finished the season first in league in points per game with 1.95 and goals per game with 0.85 finishing with 39 points and 17 goals.

Danziger, a senior from Smithtown, N.Y., was named the 2013 MAAC Field Hockey Championship Most Valuable Player after leading the Bobcats to its first NCAA postseason berth since 2003, by scoring the game winning goal in Quinnipiac’s 1-0 win over Robert Morris in the 2013 MAAC Field Hockey Championship.  Danziger finished the year with 9 goals, 9 assists and 5 defensive saves.

Hartley, a junior from Tamworth, Australia, led the Colonials to its first ever postseason championship and first ever championship title game. She was a member of the 2013 All-MAAC Second Team and the 2013 MAAC All-Championship Team. The junior midfielder finished the season with 7 goals and 7 assists for a total of 21 points.

Carroll, a senior from Oceanport, N.J., was named the 2013 MAAC Co-Player of the Year. She had four defensive saves to lead the Hawks defensive this season. On the offensive side, she finished the regular season with 9 goals and 7 assists for a total of 25 points, which puts her 6th in the league in points and 7th in the league in points per game with 1.39.

Penas, a senior from Barcelona, Spain, was named the 2013 MAAC Co-Player of the Year and a member of the 2013 All-Championship Team. She lead the league in assists per game with 0.65 finishing the season with 13 assists, the highest in the MAAC. Her assists per game mark is tied 7th best in the nation.
