Edison, N.J. - The Iona College Gaels men’s cross country team will take part in the 2013 NCAA championship this weekend. The Gaels, led by senior Matt Gillespie who was Iona's top finisher in the NCAA Northeast regionals last weekend, will face off with the nations best runners in what should be the most important race of the year. Barely missing out on an automatic qualifier bid to the NCAA championship, the Gaels effective 3rd place regional finish earned the team an at large bid. The Gaels will race along side 12 other at large bids, 4 individual qualifiers, and 18 automatic qualifiers.
Iona College sophomore Kate Avery of the women's cross country team, who finished fifth overall in the NCAA Northeast regional race, has been invited to join the NCAA championship race as an individual qualifier . Avery’s finish earned her the chance to compete with 12 at large bid teams and 18 automatic qualifier teams, along with three other individual qualifiers for the championship title.
The NCAA championship will take place Saturday, November 23rd. The men's race wil begin at 12:00 PM and the women's race will begin at 1:15 PM in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Iona men's team, along with individual runner Kate Avery, will represent the MAAC for a shot at a national title.
