MAAC Trio Named To Academic All-America Team

EDISON, N.J. – A trio of outstanding senior student-athletes who honed their athletic skills on the soccer fields of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference have been honored for their academic achievements as well.
Midfielders James Beeston of Siena College and Franklin Castellanos of Iona College were named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Second Team, while Eric Elgin of Rider University was named to the Third Team. The Capital One Academic All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Beeston, a senior from Newcastle-Under-Lyme, England, is an English major with a 3.60 GPA at Siena. He is a two-time All-MAAC First Team selection who led the Saints in scoring this past year, with six goals and eight assists for 20 points.
Iona’s Castellanos is a management major with a 3.53 GPA. He was named the MAAC’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2013, and led the league in scoring with 31 points on nine goals and 13 assists. Castellanos, from Dover, N.J., was a three-time All-MAAC first team selection.
Elgin, a defender for Rider, is an accounting major with a 3.97 GPA. Elgin, from Mechanicsburg, Pa., has started 56 of 65 games he played in for the Broncs, and helped Rider maintain one of the MAAC’s more efficient defenses. He played almost every minute this past season. Elgin is a three-time MAAC All-Academic selection.
