Clements and Avery Named Corvias ECAC Cross Country Runners of the Week

Edison, NJ – Iona College's Kieran Clements was named Corvias ECAC Division I Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week, while Kate Avery, also of Iona, earned the award on the women’s side for the fourth time this season.

Clements, a sophomore from Hadleigh, England, won the 2013 MAAC men's cross country championship 8k race with a time of 25:27.94 last Friday at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, New York. The Iona College men's cross country team earned its 23rd straight conference title with a perfect score of 15 as the first six runners to cross the line wore Maroon & Gold.  The win extended NCAA Division I's longest active conference championship streak.  Clements, Iona's top finisher, crossed the line within one second of three teammates to win the MAAC individual championship. Clements became the 12th straight Gael to win the individual title and 18th all-time.

Avery, a sophomore from Newton Aycliffe, England won the 2013 MAAC women's cross country championship 6k race with a time of 21:07.14 at Van Cortlandt Park last Friday. Avery’s time is the 2nd fastest time in MAAC history on the Van Cortlandt Park course. 21:07.14 is the top finishing time since 2011. The Iona College women's cross country team earned its ninth straight conference title.  The sophomore took the individual crown, winning the race by just under a minute.  She is the eighth straight, and eighth different individual MAAC champion for the Gaels.
