Manhattan Wins 2013 MAAC Men's Indoor
Track & Field Championship

N.Y. - The Manhattan
College men's team captured its 17th straight title at the 2013 MAAC
Indoor Track & Field Championship at the New Balance Armory Track &
Field Center in New York City.
The Jaspers
won the meet with a team score of 159. Rider University finished second with
112 points. Saint Peter's University was third with 104, followed by Iona
College (90) and Marist College (29).
Manhattan's
Tom Bechert was chosen as the Most Outstanding Performer for Field Events.
Bechert came in second in the pole vault (4.8m), and also scored points for his
team in the shot put (14.32m), long jump (6.77m), and high jump (1.94m).
Matt
Gillespie from Iona College was voted the Most Outstanding Performer for Track
Events. Gillespie won the 800 meter (1:52.33) and one mile run (4:05.21), and
anchored the final leg of the men's distance medley team that set a new MAAC
Championship record. Along with teammates Jake Byrne, Darian Edwards and Chris
Stogsdill, the Gaels finished with a time of 9:58.32.
New MAAC
Championship records were also set in the 60-meter hurdles and pole vault.
James Burroughs from Rider University completed the hurdles in 7.96 seconds,
and Manhattan's Brian McGovern barely eclipsed the old MAAC record (5.09m) by
successfully clearing 5.10m.
