2013 MAAC Water Polo Championship Begins Saturday

The 2013 MAAC Water Polo Championship begins this Saturday, April 27 with two matches at McCann Natatorium on the campus of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York.
At 1 p.m., second-seed Iona College will face third seed Marist. The second semifinal, slated to begin at 3 p.m., will feature top seed Wagner against fourth seed Villanova. On Sunday, April 28, the consolation match will be played at noon followed by the championship match at 2 p.m. All four contests can be seen live on MAAC.TV.
The 2013 MAAC Water Polo Awards Banquet will be shown on MAAC.TV free of charge. Coverage will begin at 7:00 pm on Friday, April 26.
Wagner enters the championship with an overall record of 25-10, 10-2 in conference play, after finishing in a three-way tie for first place with Iona and Marist. Villanova is 0-2 vs. Wagner on the season, with the second match between the two ending in Wagner’s favor with the score of 11-10. Iona qualified for the second seed by having a higher goal differential than Marist in the tie breaker. Marist holds the season series over Iona, 2-0, with both matches decided by one goal. (9-8 and 8-7 victories for the Red Foxes).
Iona enters the weekend having won the last two MAAC titles, and will look to capture the program’s fourth title and tie Marist’s record of four championship titles. Wagner, having lost the past two championship games to the Gaels, will also be looking to capture the program’s fourth title and match Marist’s record of four championships having previously won in 2003, 2005, and 2007.
Marist enters the weekend trying to capture the program’s fifth overall title. Villanova has never won a title and the last time they played for a title was in 2005.
