Bechert & Neumeyer Earn MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Performers of the Week Awards
Edison, NJ – Manhattan College’s Tom Bechert and Iona College’s Regina Neumeyer were named the MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Performers of the Week.
Bechert, a Senior from Munich, Germany, won the decathlon at Princeton’s Larry Ellis Invitational last week, despite scoring points in only nine of the 10 events. Bechert was leading after three events when he no-heighted in the high jump. However, he recovered and had an excellent second day. In the eighth event, the pole vault, Bechert had the second-best mark in school history, clearing a personal-best 5.15 meters (16 feet, 10¾ inches) to qualify for the IC4A Championships and NCAA East Preliminary Round. He then notched a time of 4:41.17 in the 1500 meters to finish with 6851 points and win the competition by 35 points. Bechert’s score was the fifth-highest in program history, and he would’ve broken Pontius Lundkvist’s record of 7515 with a successful clearance in the high jump.
Neumeyer, a Sophomore from Immenstaad, Germany, was the No. 2 collegiate finisher in the elite section of the 1,500-meter run at the Larry Ellis Invitational hosted by Princeton University. Her time of 4:24.70 was a personal best time and the 10th fastest in school history in the event. Neumeyer finished fourth overall in the 41 runner race field.
The MAAC Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held on Sunday, May 5th at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
