Edison, N.J.Richard J. Ensor, Commissioner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Sports Lawyers Association.

The Sports Lawyers Association (SLA) is a non-profit, international, professional organization whose common goal is the understanding, advancement and ethical practice of sports law. There are over 1,000 current members: practicing lawyers, law educators, law students, and other professionals with an interest in law relating to professional and amateur sports.

The mission of the SLA includes:

·         To provide educational opportunities and disseminate data and information regarding specific areas of sports law.

·         To provide a forum for lawyers representing athletes, teams, leagues, conferences, civic recreational programs, educational institutions, and other organizations involved in professional, collegiate, Olympic, and amateur sports. SLA's role is to foster the discussion of legal problems affecting sports law and to promote the exchange of a variety of perspectives and positions.

·         To promote and, where necessary, establish rules of ethics for its members involved in sports law.

“I am honored to be appointed to the Board of Directors of the Sports Lawyers Association,” noted Ensor.  “I have been a member for over 25 years and first became associated when I attended their annual meetings as a law student.  The SLA provides a valuable service for attorneys associated with leagues, conferences, players associations and related groups, and I look forward to contributing to the organization’s mission.”

Ensor was named the third Commissioner of the MAAC in August 1988. He is a member of many professional associations, including the American Bar Association. In addition, Ensor is a member of sport-related associations such as the SLA, the New Jersey Bar Association Sports Law Committee, the American Bar Association, Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Collegiate Athletics Administrators of New Jersey (CAANJ). His community work includes current stints as a board member of the Mercer County Sports & Entertainment Commission and the Monsignor Donovan High School Leadership Advisory Committee.  He has published in the areas of Sport Law and Sport Marketing. In 1994, Ensor served as chair of the New Jersey Bar Association Sport Law Committee.
