Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -

Hello all,

I am Matty Berman, a sophomore soccer player at Marist College. I will be participating in the 2013 NCAA Career in Sports Forum and I will be bringing the experience to all who are interested via this blog. Before I get into the process I went through to attend this event, allow me to give you a brief background of who I am and where I come from. As I mentioned I attend Marist College where I am in the process of pursuing a degree in Sports Communications with a minor in Public Relations. I come from West Orange in New Jersey from parents who were former college soccer players and current coaches. Due to my upbringing within the world of athletics and academics, pursuing a career in the sports world has been my goal for a long time.

I am extremely excited to participate in such a selective program the NCAA has put together for student-athletes who aspire to careers in sports. To get to this point all of us attending this conference had to go through a detailed application process involving nomination from our student athlete adviser, written responses to a series of questions, and submission of our resume to the NCAA. Upon hearing the good news of acceptance, there was a multi stepped ‘pre-work’ that we completed in which we examined our values in the light of interviewing our peers, coaches, and professors.

In the months leading up to this event I have been occupied finishing up my spring semester classes, playing a spring soccer season at Marist, and more recently competing for my u23 mens summer team at FC Copa, the club I spent my developmental high school years playing for and competing at the highest level of youth soccer.  I was able to close out the second year of my college career strongly in the classroom as well as on the field, where we went undefeated in the spring season preparing us for a successful fall.

I leave for Indianapolis, Indiana, bright and early tomorrow, Saturday, to start my journey at the NCAA Career in Sports Forum, where I will be keeping a daily blog bringing you the details of my travels and experiences.
