EDISON, NJ – Three former MAAC men’s basketball student-athletes, Canisius guard Isaac Sosa, along with forwards O.D. Anosike and Davis Martens of Siena, were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court for excelling academically in the 2012-13 season.
Sosa graduated from Canisius with a finance degree in May. Sosa, who was the Griffs’ third leading scorer (11.2), was second in the MAAC and 28th nationally with 2.8 three-point field goals made per game, and established a Canisius record 95 three-pointers. Earlier this year, Sosa was named to the Capital One Academic All-District I team, the I-AAA Athletic Directors Association Scholar-Athlete Team and the MAAC All-Academic Team.
Anosike has been the NCAA’s top rebounder the past two seasons, the first player in 40 years to win consecutive rebounding crowns. Anosike averaged 12.5 boards as junior, and hauled in 11.4 rebounds per game as a senior. The Saints’ leading scorer last season with 13.3 points per game, Anosike was also an All-MAAC Academic team selection. He graduated in May with a degree in economics, and was one of just 30 candidates nominated for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award, which measures success in competition, the classroom, the community and overall character.
Martens, who also graduated from Siena with a degree in economics, was the basketball team’s Student-Athlete of Year last season, and was named to the MAAC’s All-Academic team. He came on strong at close of last season, averaging 11.2 points and shooting 57 percent from the floor in the Saints’ final six games.
To be named to the NABC’s Honors Court, a student-athlete must be either a junior or senior, a member of the institution’s varsity team, have compiled a 3.2 or higher cumulative GPA at the conclusion of the 2012-12 season, have been at their institution for at least one year, and at an institution that is NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II.
