EDISON, NJ – Five of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s top student-athletes have been named to the 2013 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Baseball All-Star team, it was announced today by the ECAC.
The teams were selected based on a vote of regional coaches or their designee.
Siena’s slugging outfielder Mike Fish was named to the ECAC All-Stars first team. Fish was the MAAC’s 2013 Player of the Year, hitting a league leading 12 homers with 50 RBI, second best in the conference. He led the MAAC in hits (81), runs (54) total bases (136) and slugging percentage (.602), was second in the MAAC with 17 doubles, and fifth with a .358 batting average. Fish was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 32nd round of last month’s Major League Baseball First Year Player’s Draft.
Canisius, which finished the season with a 42-17 mark and won the MAAC Championship tournament, placed two players on the ECAC All-Stars second team, first baseman Jimmy Luppens and pitcher Garrett Cortright. Luppens, a first-team All-MAAC selection, was second in the league in hitting with a .368 average, and fourth with 47 RBI. Luppens’ on base percentage of .468 led the league, while his slugging percentage of .505 was third.
Luppens’ teammate Cortight was 11-4 in 16 starts with a 2.41 ERA and 76 strikeouts. Cortright led the MAAC in ERA and was tied for first with 11 victories. The 6-foot-5 righty, a first-team All-MAAC selection who was a 40th round pick of the Baltimore Orioles, threw five complete game wins and set a MAAC record with 115.2 innings pitched.
Matt Kriss of Iona was named to the ECAC’s second team as a utility player. A starter in all 51 games for the Gaels, Kriss hit .287 with a team leading seven doubles, 16 walks and 20 RBI. A true utility man, he started 27 games at third base, 17 at shortstop, four games at first, three at DH, and two as a pitcher, while earning All-MAAC first team honors.
Rider’s Kurt Sowa, who posted a gaudy 11-1 record and allowed opposing pitchers to hi just ,180 against him, was also named to the ECAC All-Stars second team. He allowed just 5.79 hits per nine innings. Sowa was the 2013 MAAC “Pitcher of the Year” after going 7-0 in conference play.
