MAAC Trio Earns ACWPC All-America Recognition

EDISON, NJ –Amy Olsen and Alyssa Turza of Iona College, along with Jessica Hamby of Marist College, were named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches’ Honorable Mention All-American team, it was announced today.
Olsen, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year, led Iona with 128 points and 102 goals. Olsen, who just completed her junior season, also contributed 26 assists and 49 steals, and drew 89 kickouts while recording seven field blocks. Also a member of the All-MAAC first team, Olsen scored two goals in the Gales 12-10 win over top-seeded Wagner in the MAAC Championship match.
Turza, a recent graduate of Iona, scored 102 points on 85 goals and 17 assists. Turza also drew 40 kickouts and recorded three blocks. A first team All-MAAC selection, Turza joined Olsen on the MAAC Championship All-Tournament team.
Olsen and Turza served as captains of the Gaels in the 2013 season, and led the team to a 21-11 mark. Iona also claimed its third consecutive MAAC Championship, and its third straight NCAA Championship tournament appearance.
Hamby, who will be a junior, led Marist with 67 goals and was the Red Foxes’ second leading scorer with 91 points. Hamby also contributed 24 assists for Marist, which finished with a 25-12 record, including 10-2 in MAAC action. Hamby scored three goals in Marist’s 12-9 win over Villanova to claim third place in the MAAC Championship.
Student-athletes are recognized by the ACWPC by demonstrating athletic talent in the pool, leadership, and their contributions to help solidify the sport of water polo.
Iona head coach Brian Kelly was a finalist for the ACWPC Division I Coach of the Year award, which went to the head coach of the Southern California national champions, Jovan Vavic.
